The two major types are ceramic and porcelain. Both start from the core material of clay, but porcelain is much denser and slightly more water resistant because it is forged at a higher temperature.
Ceramic tiles come in more colors and larger sizes, allowing for a unique floor in your bathroom or kitchen, and depending on the type you choose they usually cost less than porcelain. Tile Flooring - frequently asked questions
Plan on 2-3 days for a typical room - one day for demo and prep, one for setting tile, one for grout and sealing. Showers and large-format tile usually add a day or two on top of that.
Sometimes, if the existing tile is solidly bonded, flat, and the added height won't cause trouble at doorways. More often we pull the old tile so we're starting from a flat, known subfloor - either way we'll tell you straight during the estimate.
